2-2013 Steve has been selected as one of the winners of the 2013 Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award. They are given annually and awards celebrate writers who’ve given generously to other writers, or to the broader literary community. Steve’s work through History Matters, where he’s taught the craft of writing to over 2000 students (with all of the money raised from the those workshops going to historic preservation projects) earned him the honor. The awards will be presented at the Poets & Writers’ annual dinner, In Celebration of Writers, on Monday, March 18, 2013 in New York City. For more information, please click here.

1-2013 Some terrific news. The Columbus Affair paperback, last week, in its first 7 days of release, landed at #7 on The New York Times bestseller lists. Last May, the hardcover debuted at #4. That’s two solid performances. Thanks to all of you who made it possible.

1-2013 Jon Land is a terrific thriller writer in his own right, but he also is a respected reviewer for the Providence-Journal. Jon has picked his top five books for 2012 and The Columbus Affair weighed in at #2, just behind my good friend, Lee Child and ahead of my other good friend, James Rollins (I like that part). Considering the number of books Jon deals with each year, its quite an honor. Thanks, Jon. Check out the full list below.
Our reviewers pick their favorites for 2012
Jon Land
A Wanted Man, by Lee Child. (Delacorte) Both Child and his iconic hero Jack Reacher have never been better in this terrific tale highlighted by a bloodily effective climax. Higher stakes this time out for this modern day gunfighter, but Reacher is more than up to the task. Pity the bad guys who pick him up hitchhiking!
The Columbus Affair, by Steve Berry. (Ballantine) Berry departs from his Cotton Malone series to give us a sterling standalone rich in both history and pathos. Great writing, great characters and a big, bold story from the best there is at incorporating then into now.
Bloodline, by James Rollins. (Morrow) An absolutely impossible book to put down, Rollins latest speculative thriller gives us a quest for immortality inside a twist-laden plot packed with cabals and conspiracies. When it comes to layering action with intrigue and mysticism, Rollins is simply the best there is.
Two Graves, by Doug Preston and Lincoln Child. (Grand Central) The latest and best in the Aloysius Pendergast series may or not be supernatural in theme and races to a bracing climax in the jungles of South America, the ultimate irony being that Pendergast can solve any crime except one that hits closest to home. Brilliant in all respects.
The Panther, by Nelson DeMille. (Grand Central) DeMille’s latest to feature John Corey is a tour de force of storytelling power. His use of Islamic radicals as contemporary boogeymen is spot on and Corey is just the man to make them pay for their sins. The kind of book you break appointments to finish uninterrupted.

10-2011 My good friend M.J. Rose asked if she could use Cotton Malone in a short story. Sure. Why not? And it involves Malone seeing a sex therapist. Really? “How do you plan to accomplish that?” I asked her. Her answer was clear. “You’ll see.” And see I did. The result is In Session, where Malone joins Lee Child’s Jack Reacher and Barry Eisler’s John Rain for more visits to the therapist. It’s unique short fiction and worth a look. It’s now available for download from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Wish You Well Foundation, supporting family literacy.

5-2011 Steve kicked-off the 2011 tour for The Jefferson Key on May 18 in Wilson, North Carolina. About 100 people turned out for the event at the Barton College campus library. The next event was at Barnes & Noble in Greenville, North Carolina, and he gave out the first roll of Jefferson Gold Dollars to a fan from Greenville, South Carolina. At a standing room only crowd at Quail Ridge books in Raleigh, a law student from South Carolina drove 5 hours to see Steve and won the roll of Jefferson dollars. From there, he moved on to Houston, Texas, on Sunday for an event at Murder By The Book. Another standing room only crowd of over 100 fans brought their books to be signed, including several who brought their entire collection for a personalized signature. The winner of the Jefferson dollars was Paulette Hatfield from Palm Coast, Florida. She drove 15 hours to have her books signed. Now that’s a true Malone’s Clones fan. Thanks Paulette. On Monday, Steve started in Portland, Oregon, with a luncheon for the Historic Preservation League of Oregon where they announced the 10 Most Endangered Sites in Oregon. That evening he enjoyed the book signing at Powell’s Books in Beaverton, Oregon, with a crowd that asked a lot of questions. The winner of the Gold Jefferson Dollars came from two hours away. Tuesday Steve was in Salem, Oregon, for a Luncheon to benefit the Friends Of The Jefferson Library, where he spoke and took questions for an hour. There was another standing room only crowd of over 100 on Wednesday in Phoenix at the Poisoned Pen book store, where the winner of the Jefferson Dollars drove over 2 hours each way to see Steve. He wrapped up the tour on Thursday in Evergreen Park, Illinois, where ten libraries partnered to present an event. Even though it was a cold evening, there was standing room only at the Evergreen Park library, with about 100 fans listening and asking questions for an hour before having their books signed. Thanks to all the fans that stopped by at the different events. Steve and Elizabeth enjoyed getting to meet and visit with all of you. 8-2010 We have a winner!!!! The fan naming contest was a huge success. There were several hundred entries, many of which contained multiple suggestions. In all, there were nearly 1500 suggested names for the Malone fans. In the end, one stood out, so here it is: Malone’s Clones, 100% Pure Cotton. It’s quite clever. The first part was suggested by quite a few of the entrants, but the first one to send their e-mail along was Merrill Kalman of Scottsdale, AZ. The second part was the brainchild of the novelist, David Robbins, who, on being told of the selection, offered the clever reference to Cotton. Thanks to everyone who gave us suggestions and we welcome all of Malone’s Clones.

2-2010 From TheBookStudio.com – “I’m 28, and have never been much of a reader. While working as a music promoter for a short period of time I realized that I had lots of down time during the day and while traveling from city to city. One day while shopping, in a store I will not mention because they are (a) horrible employers/corporation, I saw this book that caught my eye……The Amber Room. I’d never heard of it but something about the cover screamed, “MUST READ”. I finished the book in 4 days. Never had I finished a book, lack of interest in the topic or my A.D.D., lol. Three years later and I’m still riding along with Cotton Malone.
Thank You Steve Berry!!!!”

The tour then continued on to Phoenix with a stop at The Poisoned Pen bookstore, in Houston, Texas for an appearance at The Houston Museum of Natural Science, and on to Dallas, Texas, at Barnes & Noble. Steve and James Rollins were in Stuart, Florida, for an appearance at Bookmania!, then took a few days off to relax. 10-2009 A side note on the cover for The Paris Vendetta. Originally, the Eiffel Tower dominated the cover, but it’s been altered to give more credit to the gentleman whose treasure forms the basis of the story —- Napoleon. He’s buried at the Hotel des Invalides in Paris and much of the book takes place at or around that location, so it seemed a perfect fit to place des Invalides on the cover. Look a little familiar? It does resemble the U.S. Capitol, St. Peter’s in Rome, and St. Paul’s in London. A truly distinctive form. Here are the thoughts of one early reader —- #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child — who said, “All the Berry hallmarks are here: scale, scope, sweep, history – plus breathless second-by-second suspense. I love this guy.”
10-2009 History Matters, the foundation Steve and Elizabeth started, held its first fundraising event in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on October 23. The 3 hour writers’ workshop session was a resounding success. There was a lunch as well, where Steve spoke to the crowd and signed books, which were included as part of the ticket. All of the money raised from the workshop and luncheon went to fund the Chapin Memorial Library’s oral history project. Cathy Wiggins, the library director, was ecstatic. “History Matters contacted the library about holding an event. Steve’s generosity is just overwhelming. You do not get many 10 million-copy, best-selling authors who are willing to do a three-hour writers workshop and a luncheon for free to benefit the community.”
Over the coming months, History Matters is planning events in California, Virginia, and another in South Carolina. If you’re interested in having one in your community, contact Steve and Elizabeth at historymatters@steveberry.org.
8-2009 Read the terrific review from Library Journal for The Paris Vendetta:
“In Berry’s latest page-turner after The Charlemagne Pursuit, Cotton Malone discovers a Secret Service agent breaking into his Copenhagen bookstore. The agent, Sam Collins, was sent by Cotton’s friend Henrik Thorvaldsen to seek his help in getting revenge against the person Henrik has discovered to be responsible for his son’s death. The guilty party has ties to a secret organization that plans to take down the global economy with help from a secret Napoleon carried to his grave. 9-2008 Read the starred review of The Charlemagne Pursuit from Publishers Weekly.
“In bestseller Berry’s The Venetian Betrayal, Malone embarks on a search for answers about his father, Capt. Forrest Malone, after learning that instead of dying in 1971 in a nuclear sub accident in the North Atlantic, his father actually died while on a secret submarine mission to the Antarctic. Meanwhile, bad guy Adm. Langford Ramsey schemes to become the next ranking officer of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The two story lines merge as a group led by Malone races to Antarctica, where they find a strange underground city belonging to the Aryans, an advanced race who inhabited the earth at the dawn of our own civilization. A meticulous researcher, Berry carefully integrates such elements as Charlemagne, Nazis, ancient manuscripts, historical puzzles and scientific surprises into the plot. Those who relish suspense in The DaVinci Code vein will snap this one up, the best yet in the series.”
